Women's Rowing Advances Five to Finals at Knecht Cup; N8 Takes Silver

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- The Temple women's rowing team had a strong showing at the 2017 Knecht Cup on Lake Mercer this weekend. The Owls advanced five boats to finals, culminating in a silver medal from the novice eight and a petite final victory from the varsity eight.
Temple's varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, novice eight, and novice four all earned spots in finals with solid racing in rough conditions on Saturday. When racing was over on Sunday, Temple's novice eight came away with a silver medal.
In the finals, the Owls' N8 took second in a fast field, that was won by Wisconsin's lightweight novices. The Badgers finished in 6:57.44, while Temple was second in 7:07.04, and UNC took third in 7:09.12. Colgate, Miami, Buffalo, and Princeton rounded out the field.
The Owls' varsity eight had a tremendous finals race, winning the petite final in 6:47.02, going neck-in-neck with conference-foe SMU, who took silver in 6:47.80. Temple's time was the third fastest among all three finals this afternoon.
Temple's varsity four narrowly missed out on a medal, taking fourth place in its grand final. The Owls finished the course in a time of 7:46.83, just over two seconds off of UNC's bronze medal pace.
In other grand finals, Temple's second varsity eight took sixth (7:09.95), while the the novice four placed seventh (8:37.61).
SEMIFINALS
Temple's varsity four topped another deep field in the semifinals, clocking in at 7:47.16 to earn a spot in the grand final. In the varsity eight race, Temple took fourth in a tight race where the top four spots were separated by just 2.35 seconds.
HEATS
The varsity four opened the racing on Saturday with a heat victory, out-pacing five other boats with a time of 7:49.42. The second varsity four narrowly missed out on a spot in its final, finishing third in the heat, clocking in at 8:12.02, behind Delaware (8:04.93) and Marist (8:12.02), ahead of three other boats, including conference-rival SMU.
Temple's novice four advanced with a third place finish in its heat in 8:41.60, ahead of Carnegie Mellon, Villanova, and Stevens.
In varsity eight racing, Temple won it's opening heat in a time of 6:52.26. The Owls topped a six-boat field that included Bucknell, UNC, Villanova, Fairfield, and Loyola. Temple's second varsity eight also advanced, finishing second to only Miami, clocking in at 7:10.92, in a six-boat race.
