Pro Owls: Field Hockey's Maris Stern

7.13.17 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA -- As part of Temple's #ProOwls series, this summer OwlSports.com will feature Q&A's with student-athletes who have stepped out into the work force, whether full-time or for a summer internship. We caught up with Maris Stern, a rising redshirt junior for the Owls' field hockey team, who is working as an outpatient management marketing intern at B. Braun Medical Incorporated in Bethlehem, Pa.

1.) What is your job title and what does it entail both day-to-day and long term?
I'm an OPM Marketing Intern (outpatient management) at B. Braun Medical Incorporated in Bethlehem, Pa. My days consist of a mixture of interaction and self work. I email coworkers, meet yet another CEO, and learn new things. Whether I'm learning about products here or the brand as a whole, it's always something new. I've been introduced to current and new products and how to market them in multiple ways. It is a weekly occurrence to meet with my team and collaborate on our ideas.

2.) How has your major helped prepare you for your current role?
As a student in the Fox School of Business, we are taught how to act in the business setting and the knowledge behind all aspects. Being a marketing major and currently in a marketing internship, they both correlate very well. It's a good feeling to know what I'm learning at school is proving to be true in the business world.

3.) What are your favorite and maybe less favorite things about working for the summer?
My favorite thing is realizing the future I have ahead of me with my Temple education and student-athlete work habits. My less favorite thing is sitting in a cubicle for eight hours a day, but it has been fun to decorate.

4.) What parts of being a Temple student-athlete are helping you now in your internship?
For the first half of my internship, I was taking online classes while working. If I did not have this student-athlete mindset, there is no way I could have handled all these tasks at the same time. I realized how valuable the time management skills of being a student-athlete are and how they pay off.

5.) What advice would you give your teammates about preparing for life in the "real world?"
Make a good first impression. When you meet somebody, sell yourself. If they ask about you, tell them all the good things about yourself. You never know what that person can do for you in life or in your career.
