Brenda McDermott Earns BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award
7.26.17 | Women's Lacrosse
NEW YORK - If you thought the awards were done rolling in for Brenda McDermott, think again. The Temple lacrosse graduate, a standout performer on the field for the Owls for the last two seasons, has now been honored for her off-the-field success with recognition as a BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winner.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
McDermott is a 2017 Cum Laude graduate with a GPA of 3.75 as a criminal justice major. She was a 2017 IWLCA All-Region Second Team honoree, a 2017 All-BIG EAST First Team selection and was named to Temple's President's Honor Roll for a fourth year in a row.
Additional honors for McDermott this past year included Preseason All-BIG EAST distinction and selection to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team. She was named Temple's NovaCare Comeback Student-Athlete of the Year at the annual Celebration of Champions in late April after having a second standout season following three years of setbacks due to injury.
McDermott led Temple in both goals (42) and assists (32) for 74 total points, with her 32 assists ranking second all-time in a single season in program history and her 54 career assists ranking ninth all-time. She tied her career high with five goals in the final game of the season against #2 Florida in the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals.
Temple has been awarded this top individual academic honor for women's lacrosse in the BIG EAST for a second straight season, as Jaqi Kakalecik was named the Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winner in 2016.
