Volleyball Falls 3-1 to UMBC at the Maryland Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – After edging UMBC (1-1) to win set one, Temple volleyball suffered close losses in the next three sets to lose 3-1 to the Retrievers by scores of 25-23, 26-28, 26-28 and 20-25. The Owls (1-1) will face the host Terrapins tonight at 7 p.m. to close out play in the Maryland Invitational.

Keys to the Match
> Two sets went to extra points in a match that was tight all the way through. Both the first and third sets were tied 16 times.

> The last tie of the first set came at 21-21. The Owls gave up one set point after going up 24-22, but closed it out on a kill by Janine Simmons for a 25-23 win.

> Temple was out-hit by a small margin in set one, but recorded two aces while the Retrievers had none.

> UMBC surged out to leads of 7-0 and 9-1 in the second set, but a 7-2 run for the Owls made it a three-point margin.

> Later in the second set, there were ties at 23, 24, 25 and 26-all. The Owls had set points at 24-23 and 26-25, but UMBC fought off both and posted three straight kills to win 28-26.

> The third set was again tied 16 times, but this time it was UMBC who came out on top. The Owls had one set point at 25-24, but the Retrievers posted four kills in the final five points to win 28-26.

> Attack errors were costly for the Owls in set four, as UMBC out-hit Temple .225 to .028. After coming within a point at 21-20, Temple committed attack or service errors on three of the final four points to lose 25-20.

> UMBC's Carmen Freeman led all players with 16 kills, hitting .314 for the match.

Individual Highlights
> Senior Izzy Rapacz notched her second double-double in as many matches, leading Temple with 14 kills and 12 digs. Rapacz also stuffed the stat sheet with four blocks and two aces.

> Junior middle blocker Iva Deak was the Owls' most efficient hitter with nine kills and just two errors for a percentage of .412.
 
> Like Rapacz, senior setter Kyra Coundourides recorded her second double-double of the weekend with 11 digs to go with 42 assists.
 
> Sophomore Dana Westfield has reached double-digits in kills in both matches of her collegiate career, posting 11 vs. UMBC after racking up 10 in the Owls' win vs. Northeastern.

> Senior Janine Simmons was Temple's third player with double-figure kills, recording 10 along with a team-best five blocks.
