Men's Soccer Travels to Villanova on Tuesday, then to Delaware on Thursday

PHILADELPHIA –After suffering a 3-1 loss to Saint Joseph's in its season opener on Aug. 25, Temple men's soccer is looking for better luck in two road matches this week. On Tuesday, Aug. 29, the Owls take on Villanova in a 4 p.m. game at the Higgins Soccer Complex. Next up, the squad will head to Delaware on Thursday, Aug. 31 for a 2 p.m. matchup at the Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Scouting the Owls
> The Owls head into the second week of regular season play coming off of a 3-1 loss to Philadelphia Soccer Six rival Saint Joseph's. Temple logged its first and only shot of the game in the 34th minute courtesy of a penalty kick taken by senior Joonas Jokinen.
> In the American's Coaches' preseason poll, Jokinen snagged a spot on the preseason all-conference team.
> Jokinen is Temple's leading returning scorer, with three goals and six assists last season.
> At starting goalkeeper, redshirt senior Alex Cagle tallied 52 saves last season, logging a save percentage of .776. Cagle was last year's Soccer Six goals against average leader with an average of .82.
> The Owls are led by co-captains Cagle, redshirt senior Mark Grasela, senior Brendon Creed, and junior Hermann Doerner.
Scouting the Wildcats
> The Wildcats are coming into 2017 off a 10-win season, featuring the squad's first NCAA tournament appearance.
> Villanova took a 3-2 loss in its season opener at No. 13 Virginia on Friday. Senior Lucas Hodges and sophomore transfer Luca Mellor scored the goals for Villanova. Hodges with the first, giving Villanova an early boost. Mellor scored for the Wildcats in the 68th minute off a corner kick.
> Villanova was out-shot by Virginia 27-13. Returning goalie Will Steiner logged four saves.
> Hodges is Villanova's leading returning scorer with six goals and three assists in 2016.
Scouting the Blue Hens
> Delaware's second leading scorer of the 2016 season with seven goals, sophomore midfielder Fede Prieto, returns in 2017. Another key returner for the Blue Hens is redshirt junior goalie Todd Morton. Morton logged 72 saves and a save percentage of .750 last season.
> In the preseason coaches' poll, Delaware was projected to finish fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association. Five players were selected to the CAA's Preseason All-Conference Team: junior midfielder Robert Gillin, Morton, senior captain and defender Thibault Philippe, Prieto, and junior captain and defender John Schroeder.
> The Blue Hens are defending CAA champions and also made an appearance in the 2016 NCAA tournament.
> Delaware opens its season on Monday, Aug. 28 at 4 p.m. vs Bryant.
