Fencing Adds Four Recruits to 2017-18 Roster
8.7.17 | Women's Fencing
PHILADELPHIA - Fresh off a record-setting season, Temple fencing head coach Dr. Nikki Franke has announced the names of four geographically diverse recruits who will join the Owls starting in the fall of 2017. Eva Hinds (Oregon City, Ore.), Marielle Luke (Anchorage, Alaska), Megan Ross (Fairport, N.Y.) and Kari Weiner (Bielefeld, Germany) will all bring their fencing talents to North Broad Street.
"We are very excited about our incoming class," said Franke. "They all come from very different places and Fencing Clubs, but have two things in common - they love fencing and are very excited about becoming our newest group of 'Temple Owls.' Their talent, passion for fencing and strong work ethic will serve them well in our nationally ranked program. We expect a lot from them and have no doubt they will contribute significantly to our team's success this season. Like them, we can't wait to get started."
Hinds, a sabre fencer from the PDX Fencing Club, took sixth place in the junior division earlier this year at the January North American Cup (NAC). One month earlier, she placed fifth in Division IA at the December NAC, and eighth in Division I. At the 2016 Division IA National Championships, Hinds earned second place. She plans to major in art at Temple.
Luke, an epee fencer, comes to Temple from the Washington Fencing Academy. She is currently ranked second in Region 1 for junior women's epee and has been Alaska's top-ranked epee fencer since 2013. She was a gold medalist in Division II at the 2014 October NAC, and took 16th place in juniors at the 2016 November NAC. While at Temple, Luke plans to major in communications with a focus in public relations.
Both Ross (Rochester Fencing Club) and Weiner (OFC Bonn) will join Franke's foil squad. Ross's top recent finish was third place in juniors at the Boston RJCC in December, 2016. In February of 2017, she placed 14th in Division IA at the Cobra ROC. During the summer of 2016, Ross took 11th place in Division II at the Summer Nationals, and 23rd place in Division IA. While at Temple, Ross plans to major in bioengineering.
Weiner is coming off a second-place team finish at the 2017 World Cup in Croatia, and an eighth-place individual effort at the 2017 German Junior Championships. The year prior, she placed third at the German Junior Championships, and 24th at the 2016 World Championships in France. Weiner plans to major in economics at Temple.
