1.26.18 | Women's Track and Field
State College, Pa. - Temple track and field had a record-breaking start to the weekend at the Penn State National. On the first day of competition, the Owls broke the school indoor distance medley relay record and junior Crystal Jones notched a new personal best in the pentathlon.
Keys to the Meet
> Junior Crystal Jones began Temple's action in the women's pentathlon. With combined times and marks from the 60m hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump, and 800m, Jones notched a personal best in the series with a 3544. The afternoon's score topped her previous 3528 best earned at the 2017 American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. She now sits at No. 1 in the American for the indoor pentathlon.
> Junior Sylvia Wilson, sophomore Ebonee Jackson, and freshman Sydney Williams each represented the Owls in the 60m hurdles. After snagging three of the top 15Â spots in the preliminary round, the trio moved on to the semi-finals. Wilson and Williams completed the race in times 8.68 and 8.84, respectively. Jackson's time of 8.66 advanced her to the finals. Overall, the sophomore placed seventh in the event (8.84).
> Temple's distance-medley relay (DMR) team (sophomore Millie Howard and freshmen Mallorie Smith, Helene Gottlieb, and Lucy Jones) etched their names in the record book, claiming the fastest indoor DMR time in program history. The quad finished the race in 11:42.9, topping the 2013 indoor team's best (11.43.63).
> Junior Katie Leisher gave second-place show in the 5000m run. Completing the race in 17.27.29, she finished only behind Richmond's Colleen Carney.
Quotable
> "I've definitely progressed since last season in the pentathlon. The American Athletic Conference championship is coming up in four weeks and by then I aim to reach 4000 points or higher. Today's performance was a good indication of the shape I'll be in come time to face our conference opponents." – Crystal Jones
> "I'm impressed with the way our team composed themselves throughout the very long day of competition we had. Crystal did a great job today and we are looking forward to seeing her continued growth in the event. Although her score was a personal best, there are still things she knows that she can improve on which makes us excited to see what she will be able to do by the time we head to our conference meet at the end of February. I am very proud of our hurdlers performances today. Ebonee made it to the finals in a very competitive field while Sylvia had her best race in a long time. Our DMR team also ran a solid race. They are definitely capable of re-breaking the record before the end of the season, which is very exciting to see. As for Katie, she has worked very hard over the past few years to perfect her craft as a distance runner and we can see that the dividends are starting to pay off. Overall we had a great start to the weekend today and I expect to see more good things happen from our athletes during the rest of the weekend here at Penn State." – Head coach Elvis Forde.
