No. 7 Fencing Set for Northwestern Duals; Coach Franke Goes for Win No. 800

2.1.18 | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA - The seventh-ranked Temple fencing team has a busy upcoming weekend at the Northwestern Duals, where the Owls (14-7) will face 10 opponents from Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 3-4. The weekend will be a special one for the program, as head coach Dr. Nikki Franke stands just five wins away from 800 in her career.

Milestone Awaits
> Coach Franke came into the 2017-18 season with a career record of 781-230-1, and the Owls have 14 wins so far to bring her career total to 795 in her 46th season.
> Franke's 700th win came less than four years ago, in December of 2014. She is the third all-time winningest coach in NCAA fencing history, and second among coaches who have only women's teams.

Scouting Temple
> The Owls are coming off a 7-3 weekend at the Philadelphia Invitational on Jan. 20-21, going 5-1 on the first day and 2-2 on the second. The Owls' losses came against #2 Columbia, #8 Northwestern and Yale.
> Last year at the Northwestern Duals, the Owls won a program-record 11 matches, finishing at 11-1 overall and beating both #4 Ohio State and #9 Northwestern.
> Ten Owls have recorded 20 or more individual wins so far this season, led by sophomore Malia Hee (sabre) with a record of 29-13 and junior Auset Muhammad (foil) with a record of 29-19. Freshman Eva Hinds (sabre) has an impressive mark of 28-10, as does sophomore Kerry Plunkett (sabre) at 27-9.
> Sophomore Kennedy Lovelace (foil) has been strong at 27-12 overall, as has junior Blessing Olaode (sabre) at 22-9. Leading the epee squad in wins is junior Fiona Fong at 23-10.

The Opponents
> The Owls will face 10 teams in two days, including three nationally ranked opponents.
> Feb. 3 - Lawrence, #8 Northwestern, #1 Notre Dame, Stanford, FDU.
> Feb. 4 - Air Force, Incarnate Word, #5 Ohio State, UC San Diego and Cal Tech.
> Only two opponents are repeat matchups from earlier this season. The Owls beat FDU 22-5 on Jan. 20 at the Philadelphia Invitational, and lost 16-11 to Northwestern the same day.
> At last year's Northwestern Duals, the Owls scored a bigtime win vs. #4 Ohio State, 21-6. They also bested #9 Northwestern 15-12, and beat Stanford 15-12, a team just two spots outside the Top 10 at the time.
