DURHAM, N.C. - The seventh-ranked Temple fencing team went 2-1 on Sunday at the Duke Invitational, defeating UNC and Brandeis but falling to #10 Duke. The Owls now stand at 24-9 overall in the 2017-18 season.
Meet Results
> The day started well with a 15-12 win over a strong UNC team, the second team receiving votes outside the Top 10. Both the foil and epee squads defeated the Tar Heels.
> Host and 10th-ranked Duke got the best of Temple in match two, winning 16-11 despite a 5-4 win for the Owls' foil squad.
> Sabre was a perfect 9-0 and foil won 7-2 as the Owls took down Brandeis, 19-8, in their third match of the day.
> Overall, the foil squad finished a perfect 3-0 for the day.
Individual Highlights
> The best record of the day belonged to foil sophomore Kennedy Lovelace who went a perfect 9-0 including 3-0 marks vs. both Duke and UNC.
> Sophomore Malia Hee led the sabre squad with a 4-2 record, going 2-1 against both UNC and Duke.
> Leading the epee squad was senior and team captain Safa Ibrahim at 5-2, and she posted a 3-0 mark against UNC.
> Junior Jessica Rockford was a perfect 4-0 for sabre, going 1-0 vs. Duke and 3-0 vs. Brandeis.
Thoughts From Head Coach Dr. Nikki Franke
> "We got it together as the day went on but started out slow. We had to come from behind to defeat UNC after being down early. We knew UNC and Duke would be very strong, and we just didn't get the job done against Duke. They fenced very well and we were inconsistent with what we were doing. Against Brandeis in our final match, we fenced better."
"Now is a good time for us to have a break. We really have to get focused for our last meet, at home, and then postseason. This is the time to regroup, reset and move forward."
Up Next
> Two members of the team, Marielle Luke and Camille Simmons, will compete at next week's Junior Olympics in Memphis, Tenn. The full team will return to action in the Owls' own Temple Invitational at McGonigle Hall, set for Saturday, Feb. 24.
