OWLS IN THE COMMUNITY
During the off-season, the Temple Owls continue their Owl Outreach program, giving back to the Philadelphia community with 100 percent student-athlete participation. During their free time, the players log more than 1,000 hours of service each spring.

Under head coach Matt Rhule, the Owls have annually participated in the University-wide event "A Walk in Her Shoes," the international men's march to stop rape, sexual assault, and gender violence; the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the largest breast cancer awaeness event in the country; "Be The Match" a bone marrow drive; and various annual Thanksgiving Food Drives to support local food banks and shelters. The Temple Football team has also spent time at neighborhood elementary schools and local football programs support their various initiatives and programs.

For Mother's Day, team TUFF [Temple University Football Family], a community service intiative, was born.  In its first event-- the 2013 Susan G. Komen Race for the CUre-- team TUFF had 72 members participate and raised nearly $7,000 for cancer research.  In addition to helping with race prep and passing out water at the finish line, 15 Owls completed the one-mile fun walk.

In February 2012, the Owls hosted 100  children as a part of the Dunkin' Donut and the Police Athletic League of Philadelphia after-school program-- Dunkin' Donuts Rockin’ Reading Program.

On April 16, the Owls brought brooms, rakes, and gloves for their annual clean-up of Diamond Street, home of the Edberg-Olson Football Complex. Collecting garbage and litter, the players scoured the street bright and early.

On May 13 (Mother's Day), Temple helped with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Philadelphia for the sixth consecutive year.  The race had special meaning for LB Brandon Chudnoff (Philadelphia, Pa.), OL Adam Metz (Hummelstown, Pa.), and OL Evan Regas (Toms River, N.J.) whose mothers are all breast cancer survivors.

In the middle of the 2011 football season, the Owls took time out of their busy schedules to make food deliveries to St, John's Hospice and the Bethesda Project during their fifth annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.   The Owl players, coaches, and staff collected canned food and monetary donations. All players on the team donated their per diem to the cause.

In the Spring of 2011, the Owls completed several projects between the end of Spring drills and the beginning of final exams.

On April 20, more than 40 football Owls and the men’s basketball team bowled in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters’ Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraiser. Bowl for Kids’ Sake is the organization’s largest national fundraiser, raising over $20 million annually for children in need across the country.

Later that evening, select players spent several hours calling Temple season ticket holders, enhancing the Athletic Department’s sales efforts. Fans were thrilled to receive personal calls from the players.

On April 21, the Owls’ Cherry squad was a part of a city-wide effort clean-up, picking up garbage and sweeping Diamond Street from 10th to 15th Streets.

On April 28, six Owls-- WR Ryan Alderman (Downingtown, Pa.), OL Pat Boyle (Towson, Md.), OL Derek Dennis (Peekskill, N.Y.), OL Jeremy Schonbrunner (Salisbury, Md.), OL Wayne Tribue (York, Pa.), and OL Martin Wallace (New York, N.Y.)-- participated in the Ronald McDonald House’s volunteer appreciation dinner for their work throughout the year. Tribue, Temple’s 2011 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® member, Schonbrunner, and Wallace became a part of the entertainment, going under the spell of a hypnotist.

Over the weekend, OL Pat Boyle, LB Matt Falcone (Palmerton, Pa.), OL Scott Roorda (Westmoreland, N.Y.), OL Evan Regas (Toms River, N.J.), OL Wayne Tribue, and OL Martin Wallace volunteered as counselors at the annual Jahri Evans football camp, a free camp for children in grades 1-6. The Owls, along with two-time Pro Bowl OG Jahri Evans from the New Orleans Saints and several of his NFL teammates, encouraged the youngsters to work hard on the field and in the classroom, to stay physically active, and to say no to drugs.

On May 8, the Owls helped with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Philadelphia.

The Owls organized the largest bone marrow drive by a collegiate team, registering 630 potential donors in April 2008. The team participate annually in the Partnership Field Day and the Diamond Street Cleanup while organizing a Thanksgiving food drive for two area homeless shelters.

Prior to the Ohio game last fall, the Temple players voted to donate their weekly per diem to the Philadelphia affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The coaches and staff contributed additional cash, while Temple Athletics also donated a minimum of 10 percent of its single-game ticket sales. The team also assisted on the Komen three-day walk (during a game week). Players helped walkers unload their gear and set up their tents on Friday upon arrival at the camp site. On Sunday, beginning at 5 a.m., the played helped break down tents and load gear onto moving trucks.

A contingent of players visits children at St. Christopher’s Hospital several times throughout the year. Teammates work the North Philly Aztecs Youth Football Camp each July. The Owls also volunteer with the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, assisting with its volunteer barbecue and First Southwest Airlines Plane Pull. The Owls organize community service events each month.

For their efforts, the Owls received recognition for their service. At the Breakfast of Champions ceremony, the football team received back-to-back T.E.A.M. [Temple's Exceptional Acts for Mankind] Award in 2009 and 2010 for community service by the Temple Athletic Dept.  The team was awarded the 2009 Robert P. Levy Community Service Award from the Philadelphia Sports Congress.
