“From the AD’s Desk”
A column from Temple University Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw
September 2011
How about your Temple Owls!!!
After a suffering a heart-breaking loss to Penn State in front of a 57,323 fans - and for the first time a partisan crowd against the Nittany Lions - YOUR Owls went to College Park and stunned Maryland, 38-7, for the first win over an ACC opponent in Temple history!!
The timing could not have been better for such a statement win for Temple Football. The resurgence of the program is now the talk of college football nationally, with stories appearing daily in such publications as the New York Times, the Washington Post, Sports Illustrated and ESPN.com.
The outpouring of support from the Temple faithful has never been more evident with the crowds at the Mayor's Cup win over Villanova (32,638) and Penn state. The Temple students have also come out in record numbers, giving Lincoln Financial Field that major college football “feel”.
So to show our thanks to Philadelphia fans, and to our Temple faithful, we will be offering special $5 tickets to: Temple employees (with Temple ID); any fan that brings a canned food item to the game; fans that wear pink to support Breast Cancer Awareness; and fans that show a ticket to either the Phillies Saturday playoff game or the Eagles game vs. the 49ers on Sunday.
Now, more than ever, we need to continue this momentum and level of support as we open our MAC home season against one of the best teams in the conference - the Toledo Rockets. We need to pack the Linc Saturday at Noon to show Philadelphia, and the nation, that major college football has a home in Philadelphia with your Temple owls.
See you there. Go Owls!!!
Homecoming & Hall of Fame: October 15th will be a special Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field. Not only will it be our annual Homecoming game with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff against Buffalo, but it will also be the day we induct the Class of 2011 into Temple University’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Headlined by Olympic Gold Medalist and new women’s rowing coach Jason Read, the Class of 2011 includes former Owl greats Toni Byard-Jenkins (field hockey), Pete Dempsey (baseball), Jack Hubbert (golf), Carl Imhauser (men’s gymnastics) and Alma Kovaci (volleyball). Temple’s 1982 and 1984 Women’s Lacrosse NCAA championship teams will also be inducted. The Hall of Fame Class will be inducted in a pregame ceremony in the West Club Lounge of Lincoln Financial Field at 10:30 a.m. Cost is $20 per person.
