PHILADELPHIA - Temple junior Matt Mongiardini has been named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced today. Mongiardini threw 7.1 scoreless innings on Saturday, scattering three hits, in a 1-0 win over Dayton. He is the first Owl to win A-10 Pitcher of the Week honors twice in one season since Greg Powell won three weekly awards in 2001. The Toms River, NJ native did not allow a runner past second base to improve to 6-4 on the season. His ERA lowered to 3.41, good for fourth in the conference. Mongiardini allowed just one hit over the first five innings and Dayton only had multiple base-runners in one inning. He also won A-10 Pitcher of the Week on March 3 after beating Old Dominion. It is the third career honor for the junior, who also won the award on April 30, 2007 after throwing a complete-game shutout versus Saint Louis. Temple (23-26, 14-10 A-10) will look to clinch a spot in the A-10 Tournament beginning on Thursday at Saint Louis. The Owls will travel to Villanova on Tuesday in their final non-conference game this spring.
