CAMDEN, NJ - Temple seniors Mike Mongiardini and Stan Orzechowski were named to the Atlantic 10 All-Tournament team following the league's championship game on Saturday. Charlotte captured its second straight title with a 4-3 victory over Xavier in 11 innings and will represent the A-10 at the NCAA Tournament. Mongiardini allowed three hits and struck out five in 7.2 innings during a 5-2 win over St. Bonaventure on Wedneday. The lefthander yielded just an infield single over the first seven innings and walked six during his 132-pitch performance. He allowed one earned run to help give the Owls their first postseason victory since 2002. The transfer from Yale finished the season with a 3-2 record and 4.08 ERA. He led the team with 43 strikeouts in 57.1 innings.
Orzechowski finished the tournament with a .583 batting average (7-for-12) and knocked in a team-high five runs. He had two triples and scored five runs during the tourney. He led the team in runs (57), triples (four), home runs (seven) and was second in hits (65) and RBI (41). His 57 runs rank fifth on the single season list at Temple. The Philadelphia native batted .332 during his two-year career at Temple with 29 doubles, 109 runs scored, 13 home runs, and 73 RBI. After dropping its first A-10 Tournament contest to Rhode Island, 7-1, Temple rebounded to eliminate St. Bonaventure, 5-2. Duquense then handed the Owls a 10-7 defeat on Thursday to end TU's season. Charlotte's Rob Lyerly was the tourney MVP. He was joined on the 2008 All-Tournament by teammates O'Brien Taylor, Alex Burt and Luke Stahl; Mike Creevy, Jordan Conley and Danny Rosenbaum of Xavier; Temple's Mike Mongiardini and Stan Orzechowski; Brett Palanski of Rhode Island; and Duquesne's Derek Mechling and Bill Torre.
