2008 Race for the Cure Photo Gallery PHILADELPHIA - For its only October home game, Temple Football is hoping to raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer. In its nationally televised game against Ohio on Tuesday, Oct. 21, Temple has declared a "Pink Out", asking fans to wear pink to the game at Lincoln Financial Field. The game will be televised live from Philadelphia at 8 p.m. on ESPN2. As part of the innovative "Owls for the Cure" initiative, spearheaded by head coach Al Golden and his wife Kelly to raise funds for the Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a minimum of 10% of all single-game tickets will benefit Komen. The first 20,000 fans will receive thundersticks, sponsored by Keller Williams Realty Group. Temple students will receive pink pompoms and a pink t-shirt upon entry to the stadium. Pre-game entertainment in the Head House Plaza will include face painters, inflatable games, and area radio stations. The Roberts Event Group has brought in the band Zygomatic to perform during the pre-game festivities. Singer/songwriter Lauren Hart will perform the national anthem at the game. She is best known for her introspective lyrics and soaring vocals, and for her connection to the Philadelphia Flyers. The daughter of legendary NHL Hall of Fame announcer Gene Hart, known for 30 years as "The Voice of the Flyers," Lauren sings the national anthem before every Philadelphia Flyers home game. She has performed for Bill Clinton and Frank Sinatra, and her music has been featured in several television series, including Joan of Arcadia, Party of Five, and All My Children. "One out of every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and in this case, `women' does not necessarily mean your mother or grandmother," Al Golden said. "I recently heard of a 16-year old who found a lump in her breast. The giveaways are great incentives for people to become involved, but the greatest incentive of all is the knowledge and empowerment to enjoy a long and healthy life."
"By focusing on college students, Temple Athletics is tapping into a very critical audience in the fight against breast cancer," said Elaine I. Grobman, Executive Director of the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate. "Not only is it important to generate awareness among this group for the sakes of their own health and the health of their loved ones... but, these students also represent the generation that will empower a new era in the breast cancer movement. We are thrilled to partner with Temple in such an important initiative." For more information, visit www.OwlsfortheCure.com. Temple makes its fifth road trip of the season this week, visiting defending MAC champion Central Michigan on Oct. 11. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. on WPHT Radio 1210 AM. |
