FARMINGDALE, NY - The Temple men's golf team recorded its best team score in four years (282) in the first round and is five shots off the lead after Friday's action at The McLaughlin after carding a 282-290=572 (+12). The Owls are in second place and trail Southeastern Louisiana after 36 holes on the Bethpage Red Course.

Seniors Paul Amess and Kevin Busteed had identical scores of 70-73=143 (+3) and are tied for 16th place in the 93-player field. Junior Eric Plisko recorded a 69-75=144 (+4) to tie for 20th, while sophomore Andrew Mason followed up a 79 in the opening round with a 69 to tie for 38th (79-69=148, +8). Sophomore Joseph Kim had a 73-79=152 (+12) to round out the Temple scorecard in 67th.

The two-over 282 is the best score for TU since shooting a 278 in the second round of the James Madison Invitational on October 10, 2004. It is the fifth best score all-time and the best during second-year head coach Brian Quinn's tenure. The team record is an eleven-under 277 at the ODU Invitational on April 20, 1982.

Southeastern Louisiana leads the 18-team field with a 279-288=567 (+7). Temple is five strokes back, followed by Towson (294-284=578, +18), St. John's (295-285=580, +20) and Jacksonville State (290-290=580, +20).

Sacred Heart's Pat Fillian leads the field with a two-under 67-71=138. SE Lousiana Patrick Solberg shot a 69-70=139 (-1) to stand in second ahead of three players at even par.


 

 

Play resumes at the par-70, 6,730-yard Bethpage Red Course at 7:30 AM on Saturday.
