FLOURTOWN, PA - Senior Kevin Busteed shot a two-under 69 and leads the field after the first round of the Big 5 Invitational, played on Saturday at the Philadelphia Cricket Club. It marks the second straight week that an Owl has led at the midway point of the tournament, as junior Eric Plisko was the 18-hole leader last weekend at St. Bonaventure. As a team, the Cherry and White is in third place after recording a 295 (+11).
Busteed's round featured 13 pars, four birdies and only one bogey. It was his second best career round at Temple after carding a 68 earlier this fall at The McLaughlin. He will look to win his first tournament and the first by an Owl since April, 2005.
Plisko was two-under after 14 holes, but ran into some trouble down the stretch to record a three-over 74. He is tied for 14th place.
Sophomore Andrew Mason shot a four-over 75 and is tied for 22nd. Sophomore Joseph Kim and senior Adam Pifer are tied for 36th with identical scores of 77 (+6). Sophomore Sasha Bozic, competing as an individual, shot a three-over 74 and is tied for 14th.
Seton Hall leads the 15-team field with a six-over 290, followed by Villanova (292, +8) and Temple. The Pirates also have two players a shot back of Busteed in Colin Van Es and Dave Sampson, who each carded one-under 70s.
Play resumes at 7:45 AM on Sunday at the par-71, 6,827-yard Wissahickon Course. Live statistics will be available throughout the day, beginning on the back nine, at
