PHILADELPHIA, PA (November 5) -- Senior forward Tom Lemmon of St. Bonaventure University has been named the 1999 Atlantic 10 men's soccer Player of the Year in voting conducting among the Conference's head coaches.
In that same vote, Anthony Curtis of Rhode Island was tabbed Rookie of the Year and Duquesne's Wade Jean was selected as Coach of the Year.
Lemmon enters this weekend's Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship with a Conference-leading 19 goals while his 42 points tie him for first. The Stow, OH native's effort propelled the Bonnies into third place in the Atlantic 10 and into the Atlantic 10 Championship for the first time ever. Formerly a back, Lemmon was moved to striker this season to become one of the nation's leading scorers. He is the first St. Bonaventure player to be named Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and only the second to earn All-Conference first-team honors (Wally Senk, 1998).
Curtis was selected Rookie of the Year for putting together what is arguably the finest freshman campaign in school history. He enters this weekend's Atlantic 10 Championship as the Rams' fourth leading scorer with 19 points - 14 of which have come in league play. The native of St. Catherine, Jamaica also earns a spot on the All-Conference first-team for netting five goals and dishing out nine assists and is a primary reason for Rhode Island ranking second nationally with a 3.22 goals per game average.
Joining Lemmon and Curtis on the All-Conference first-team are Emmanuel Ayim and Mark Schulte of Dayton; Duquesne's David Kovalcik, Josh Salsi, and Terry McNelis; Adam Black of Massachusetts; Nicholas McCreath of Rhode Island; Virginia Tech's Fred Silva; and Matt Cox of St. Joseph's.
The All-Conference second-team consists of R.J. Kaszuba of Dayton; Temple's Kevin Kelly and Michael Skahan; Fred Kinateder and Jonathan Bibb of Massachusetts; Xavier's Koen Kuiken; Bill Blesi of La Salle; Rhode Island's Steven DeMoura and Mark Bryant; Jason Byrd of Duquesne; and St. Bonaventure's Alex Schmidt.
In his second year at Duquesne, Jean engineered the greatest single season turnaround in Atlantic 10 history, taking last year's 11th-place 2-9-0 team and leading it to a second-place finish and a 9-2-0 record in league play this season. In addition, this year's Dukes enter this weekend's Atlantic 10 Championship with a 12-5-2 overall record after going 3-13-1 a year ago. Before heading to Duquesne, the Johnson State College graduate spent three years as an assistant at Bowling Green, where the Falcons went to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments. He is the first Duquesne men's soccer coach to ever be named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year.
