OWLS FINISH STRONG AT 23rd ANNUAL TEMPLE FENCING OPEN
 

 
 
 

 

 
 
PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple University women's fencing team finished strong at the 23rd annual Temple Open held in McGonigle Hall today, November 2, 2002.Senior Sakinah Shaahid and sophomore Jeanne Browne led the way for the Owls as both women advanced to the final bout of their respective weapons.

In the women's foil competition, Browne led the foil squad with a second place finish while junior Nerita Brumell had her best career finish with seventh place. Freshman Jenna Remmert, who was competing in her first ever collegiate fencing tournament, placed tenth overall. Sophomore Nenna Okoro and freshman Maryanne Forsythe rounded out the foil squad with 13th and 18th place finishes. Penn State's Meredith Chin was crowned foil champion.

The sabre competion was just as intense with Shaahid taking second place and junior Aziza Hassan finishing in third place. Rutgers Alexis Jemal just edged out Shaahid to win the overall sabre competition. Sophomore Amanda Gerwer had her career best finish at the Temple Open placing 21st overall. Senior Nicole Macomber placed 26th while freshman Keri Ecker placed 33rd.

In the women's epee competition, juniors Stephanie Sargent and Sara Forsythe led the way finishing 5th and 6th repectively. Sophomores Katrina Najm and Kera Luckhardt rounded out the epee squad with 23rd and 24th place finishes. The University of Penn's Jane Goto took first place overall.

Tomorrow, November 3, 2002, day two of the Temple Open will feature the men's portion of the competition.
