PHILADELPHIA - Winter Sneed, a member of the Temple women's gymnastics team, has been selected to attend the Finding Leaders Among Minorities Everywhere (F.L.A.M.E.) National Leadership program. The 2007 F.L.A.M.E. National Leadership program will take place August 2 - 5 at the U.S. Olympic Complex in Colorado Springs, Co.
The F.L.A.M.E. Program is unique - seminars and workshops are taught by Olympic athletes and coaches, community leaders, and United States Olympic Committee (U.S.O.C.) staff members who have achieved personal, professional or athletic successes in life. Participants learn how to set and achieve goals and increase their self-confidence through such things as enhancing leadership skills, improving communication strategies and establishing a discipline of self-discovery and preparation.
Sneed, a business major, just completed a sophomore season in which she finished strong at the ECAC Championships in the balance beam and floor exercise. The Conshohocken, Pa. native, posted season highs of 9.750 in the balance beam and floor exercise in meets against Penn and Maryland, respectively. She also performed well in a dual meet with West Chester, taking first place in the floor exercise (9.600) and second place on the balance beam (9.050).
Founded in 1994, F.L.A.M.E. is a national outreach program for minority youth. In the spirit of the Olympic Ideals (Persistence, Vision, Focus, Discipline, and Commitment), F.L.A.M.E. inspires minority college students to cultivate their desire to succeed and rise above the ordinary level of expectations. All participants are either college freshmen or sophomores who have demonstrated leadership through academics, athletics and community involvement.
Participants in this year's program represent 25 colleges and universities and hail from 19 states across the nation. The students will travel to Colorado Springs, headquarters of the U.S. Olympic Movement and home to nearly 230 resident athletes, and live among the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls.
