Charisma Wright attempted to mount a Temple comeback with a goal in the 51st minute but it was not enough, as the Owls fell 2-1 to the Monmouth Hawks on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks netted two first-half goals and were able to hold on for the win and their fifth victory. Temple falls to 3-6-0.
Monmouth opened the scoring in the 10th minute of action when Andrea Lopez fired a shot on goal that bounced off Temple goalkeeper Liz Tarasevich, and Illiana Blackshear was in the right spot, as the sophomore knocked in the rebound.
Three minutes later, the Hawks just missed going up 2-0, when Alessandra DeTata rocketed a shot from the left wing that hit the far post. Lopez put the Hawks up 2-0 with her third goal of the year, lifting a shot from 30 yards out into the far netting.
Temple trimmed the Hawks' lead to 2-1 at 50:51, when Wright netted a pass from Dana Kerem.
The Owls nearly knotted the score with 10 minutes remaining, when Wright beat Monmouth's netminder Katie Buffa wide, but Kersha Walker's shot at an open net sailed wide.
In a counterattack, the Hawks' Katie Bubnis fired a shot on goal, which hit the crossbar and bounced on the goal line and out.
The Hawks outshot the Owls (3-6-0) 23-3 in the match, and enjoyed a 10-0 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Buffa made no saves in goal for the Hawks, while Tarasevich had another huge day in goal for the Owls, making 10 saves.
