PHILADELPHIA (April 5) - Temple University plated three runs in the third inning and added two in the fifth to claim the 5-3 win in game one over Drexel in softball action at Drexel Field this afternoon. The Dragons rebounded for the 8-0 victory in game two, chasing the Owls after five innings, salvaging the sweep and snapping a five-game losing streak.
Drexel took the early 1-0 lead in the opener, but Temple rallied for three runs in the top of the third as catcher Ashley Caudill (Lebanon, Tenn./Friendship Christian) emerged with a three-run triple. The Owls added two insurance runs in the fifth inning as Erin Byrne (Hainesport, N.J./Rancocas Valley) reached on an error and third baseman Christi Ragan (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown) followed with a two-run homer. For the Dragons, freshman second baseman Cassie Snow (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) went 2-for-3 in the loss with a double.
Drexel, who has struggled offensively of late, woke up the bats in game two, producing eight runs on eight hits, including a pair of doubles, to pull the 8-0 shutout win. Sophomore Candace Clark (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) picked up the victory, allowing just three Temple hits, while striking out two. Snow went 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two RBI. Junior rightfielder Kristy Heyser (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) also turned in a 3-for-3 showing with a run scored, two RBI and a stolen base. Senior first baseman Jodi Devine (Berlin, N.J./Eastern) came through with a two-run double and also scored once.
Drexel travels to Burlington, Vt., this weekend for a four-game America East Conference matchup with the University of Vermont.
