KINGSTON, R.I. (April 15) -- Freshman Bari Pflueger threw five no-hit innings as Temple held off Rhode Island, 5-4, in the second game of a doubleheader this afternoon at the URI Softball Field. The Owls took the first game 6-3. The Rams nearly spoiled Pflueger's effort by nearly coming back from a 5-0 fifth-inning deficit. Sophomore Erin Byrne got the Owls on the board in the third inning with a three-run triple. Temple added to its lead with a pair in the top of the fifth inning to increase the advantage to 5-0. The Rams answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Robin Davies reached on an error by the rightfielder, and scored when Pflueger threw sophomore Gwen Rack's sacrifice bunt into centerfield. Rack, who advanced to third on the error, scored on sophomore Crissy Tindall's ground out. URI added two more in the sixth. Senior Samantha Zigmont broke up Pflueger's no-hit bid with a leadoff single and scored on senior Courtnie Hyland's triple. Freshman Liz Naughton replaced Pflueger and was greeted by freshman Shauna Newmiller, who doubled home Hyland to make it a 5-4 game. Naughton recovered to retire the next three batters. Sophomore Lauren Spencer had four hits and a run batted in, and scored a run to lead Temple to a 6-3 victory in game one. Naughton and sophomore Nanci Lima combined for the win scattering five hits for the Owls, who broke open a 1-1 game with five unearned runs in the third inning. Senior Courtnie Hyland had a double and two RBI, and scored a run for the Rams. Sophomore Christine Pedersen turned in an outstanding performance out of the bullpen, throwing four shutout innings and allowing just two hits.
