ITHACA, NY - The Jill Breslin Era got off to a solid start this past weekend as the first year Temple women's tennis coach led her charges to two flight championships at the Cornell Fall Invite. Sophomore Elyse Steiner took the Flight B title while fellow newcomer, freshman Theresa Stangl was victorious at Flight D.

"We did real well this weekend," said Breslin, who had most recently served as an assistant at Bryn Mawr. "Besides winning two titles, we had four other players advance to the semifinals with two of those reaching the finals. All in all, it was a good start to the season."

Steiner, making her first appearance as an Owl, defeated Cornell's Dana Crutie, 6-0, 6-1, to win the Flight B title. It was her fourth win of the tournament, including a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (4) win over teammate, sophomore Anastasiia Rukavyshnykova, in the semifinals. Freshman Josephine Bergman also advanced to the semifinals of Flight B before falling to Crutie, 6-1, 6-4.

Stangl also had to win four matches en route to her singles title. She easily dispatched Ashley Ebbert of Cornell, 6-2, 6-1, in her final match.

Sophomore Christine Clermont advanced to the finals in Flight A before succumbing to Susan Sullivan of Cornell, 6-4, 6-3.

Junior Felicia Frazier also made it to the finals, winning three matches in Flight C before losing to Ruxandra Dumitrescu (Cornell), 6-0, 6-4. Frazier lost her first set of her semifinal match, 6-2, but recovered to top Cornell's Catherine Duboc, 7-5., 7-5 to close out that match.

Freshman Lucie Pazderova also advanced to the semifinals in Flight C, before falling to eventual champion Dumitrescu, 6-0, 7-5.

Junior Dina Senika and sophomore Whitney Tillman advanced to the quarterfinal round at Flight A and Flight D, respectively.

In doubles play, the teams of Senika and Steiner and Pazderova and Clermont advanced to the semifinals of Flight A.

The Owls next compete at the Cissie Leary Invitational hosted by Penn starting on September 21.
