Former Owl Luis Guzman To Play For Dominican Republic at Pan American Games

PHILADELPHIA – Luis Guzman, the starting point guard on the 2009-10 Temple University men's basketball team that posted a 29-6 record en route to a third straight Atlantic 10 Conference championship, has been selected as a member of the Dominican Republic team that will compete in the 2011 Pan American Games. Competition in men's basketball takes place from October 26-30 in Guadalajara, Mexico
Guzman, who earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in three and a half years ('10), becomes the seventh player with Temple ties to compete in the games. He joins former teammate and current Temple senior guard Juan Fernandez, who will compete for Argentina; gold medalists current TU women's rowing coach Jason Read ('03), Marcus McElhenney ('03) and Joe Spencer ('05), who were part of the United States winning men's 8+ rowing boat; current Temple assistant track coach Shameka Marshall, who is one of two long jumpers competing for the USA women's track team; and former men's track standout Josue Louis, ('10), who will take part in the men's high jump .
The 6-3 guard led the Owls assist-to-turnover (2.07) in his senior season (2009-10), while also setting career-highs in points (173, 4.9 ppg.), rebounds (147, 4.2 rpg.) and assists (112, 3.2 apg.). The Bronx, N.Y. native (Paramus Catholic HS) ended his career with 361 points, 280 rebounds and 224 assists.
Guzman, who is youngest member of the team, served as a team captain for the 2009-10 Owls, who ended the season ranked 12th in the Associated Press poll.
