HOUSTON, Texas – In the 'Battle of the Owls' on Monday night, Temple (7-3) had the last hoot as it held on to defeat the Rice Owls (7-4), 77-70, on the floor of Autry Court at the Tudor Center. Senior Juan Fernandez put up a season-high 23 points, including the 1000th point of his career on a driving layup at the 14:50 mark of the first half. The native of Argentina went five-of-seven from beyond the arc, giving him the most three pointers he's had in a game since drilling seven back on Feb. 28, 2010 in a Temple win at La Salle.
Senior Ramone Moore chipped in with 15 points on Monday, while freshman Aaron Brown reached double figures with 10 points off the bench. Junior Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson led the Cherry and White with 10 rebounds.
Temple opened the game going 2-of-8 from the field before making 11 of its next 15 shots over the next 9:10,fueling a 22-9 run to get the Owls out to a 13-point lead.
Rice refused to go away, as it cut back into Temple's advantage by closing out the half on an 11-2 scoring spree, compliments of six points from Jarelle Reischel, to narrow the gap to a four-point Temple lead at the midway point (36-32).
The hosting Owls continued to dig into Temple's lead in the opening minutes of the second half, scoring the first five points of the period to jump in front by one.
Temple trailed by as many as three points during Rice's 10-3 run to begin the second half before storming back to halt Rice from expanding the lead any further.
Fernandez hit his third trey of the game to knot the game at 42, marking the sixth and final tie between the two teams. From there, Temple cruised after Moore dribbled through the paint for a layup that put the Owls in front for the remainder of the contest.
Temple went back up by as many as 10 points with 11 minutes to go.
With his 1000th point, Fernandez becomes the 48th member in school history to accomplish the milestone. The native from Argentina reaches the new plateau only one game after Moore moved into the Temple record books with his 1000th point of his career back on Saturday at the University of Texas.
The one-game separation marks the closest time between two new 1000-point scorers in Temple Basketball history. The quickest gap occurred back in 1978-79 when Will Montford and Rick Reed accomplished the milestone two games apart.
Temple completes its Texas trip with a split, and now heads back to Philadelphia where it will have an eight-day layoff for the Holidays before getting back in action on Dec. 28 at 7:00 p.m. when it hosts the Buffalo Bulls at the Liacouras Center.
The matchup with the Bulls will round out regular season play against Mid-American Conference opponents.
