TUCSON, Ariz. - Battling through two hard-fought overtime periods, Temple fell to San Diego State, 71-64, in the NCAA Tournament Third Round at the McKale Center on Saturday afternoon. The Owls, who finish the season 26-8, were led by a game-high 17 points from junior guard Ramone Moore and a double-double effort from senior forward Lavoy Allen.
Moore recorded 15 of his 17 points over the first two periods, playing a critical role down the stretch for the Owls. Junior guard Juan Fernandez and sophomore guard Khalif Wyatt each chipped in 14 points. Sophomore forward Rahlir Jefferson pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds, adding five points.
What will be celebrated most by the Owls is the career of Allen, who played in his final game today. Allen, who recorded his 41st career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, finishes as Temple's all-time leading rebounder with 1,158.
Sophomore forward Billy White and senior forward Kawhi Leonard led the Aztecs (34-2) with 16 points apiece, and were joined by senior foward Malcolm Thomas (13 pts) and sophomore guard Chase Tapley (12 pts) as double-figure scorers. White pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds to mark a double-double.
Moore kept the Owls in it to the first media timeout, scoring Temple's first six points to match the Aztecs at 6-6 with 15:45 to go. Allen connected on his first jumper of the game to tie things up at 8-8 after a bucket by SDSU's Brian Carwell, but a three from James Rahon gave the Aztecs an 11-8 lead with 13:21 to play.
Temple stepped up the defense and got on a quick 5-0 to take a 13-11 lead at 12:15, thanks to a layup on a turnover in the Aztecs end and the first three of the game for TU from Fernandez. The trey was answered by D.J. Gay on the other end, connecting from the same spot as Rahon to take the lead back at 14-13.
Jefferson tied the game up on a one-for-two showing at the line, with neither side scoring for two minutes until Allen went to the line and sank a pair to put the Owls up 16-14 midway through the half.
The Aztecs went on a 15-5 run shortly after to take a 23-16 lead with 7:15 left, started by a three from Tapley. Back-to-back turnovers by Moore fueled a layup by senior forward Malcolm Thomas and a fastbreak dunk from White. Thomas continued the run with a floater in the lane.
Fernandez banked a three at the shot clock buzzer to temporarily halt the Aztecs, but after a TU stop on the defensive end a costly turnover turned into a fastbreak layup for Thomas, followed by a transition dunk by White.
Allen made a jumper to account for the Owls' only points since the Fernandez three, but a Gay layup put the SDSU lead at 29-21 with 4:37 left.
The Aztecs took a double-digit lead on a dunk by reserve Kawhi Leonard, but Temple gained some momentum on an 8-2 run to bring the score to 36-31 with just under a minute remaining in the half. Moore sunk a pair of free throws to start things off, and solid defensive play from sophomore guard T.J. DiLeo sparked six-straight points after a layup by SDSU's Malcolm. Jefferson, Moore and Allen combined for the final points in the run, with the score staying put as the team's went into the break.
Moore led all scorers with 10 points in the first stanza, as the Owls kept it a five point game on 46.2% shooting compared to the Aztecs 48.4%.
The run continued into the second half for the Owls, who answered a layup by White with a nearly completed three-point play by Jefferson and a three by Moore - his first of the game - to come within a possession at 38-36 with 15:50 to go.
The team's traded twos until Fernandez drained a three that brought the Owls to within one at 42-41, but a two by Thomas improved SDSU's lead and Fernandez would pick up his third foul seconds later, sending him to the bench with 11:39 on the clock. Back-to-back threes by Tapley sandwiched a floater from Wyatt, giving the Aztecs a 50-43 lead with just over 10 minutes to play.
Moore brought the Owls back to within five (52-47) with a nifty spin move on the baseline. Allen converted an SDSU turnover with a jumper from the foul line to make it a one possession game, 52-49 with 4:47 left.
Temple had chances at making it a one-point game on a runner by Fernandez, but Leonard nailed a jumper to put the Owls down five. Wyatt came up with the clutch shot Temple need, draining a three opposite the Owls bench to put the Cherry and White within two at 54-52 with just under two minutes left in the game.
The Aztecs burned a shot clock ending the possession with a miss by Gay. Allen pulled another clutch move and drove from the foul line, stopping for a hook shot to tie the game at 54-54 with 39.7 seconds left.
Temple nearly had a shot at the final possession, but a loose ball that fell out of bounds after a miss by White was awarded to SDSU. As planned, Wyatt fouled with four seconds remaining, giving the Aztecs little time for the final shot, which was defended tremendously to force overtime.
Fernandez started the extra period with a transition three, which was answered with a two by Leonard, keeping the lead favoring the Owls at 57-56. The Argentinian came down the court on the next possession and drove to the hoop for two to put Temple up three, 59-56, with 2:59 to go.
