DiPietro picks up a pitcher and a utility player
Release on Kastner and McKeon
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Head Temple softball coach Joe DiPietro has announced the signing of two more players to the class of 2015. Jess Mahoney and Alex Stermel join previously announced signees Julia Kastner and Lacey McKeon. The group will begin their Temple careers in the 2011-12 season.
Mahoney joins the Owls from William Byrd High School in Vinton, Va. The right-handed pitcher was a four-time First-Team All-Blue Ridge District player, and a First-Team All-State selection in 2010. In addition, the Roanoke, Va., native earned first-team all-region III honors four times, while picking up the Blue Ridge District Pitcher of the Year laurel in 2009, and the Player of the Year accolade in 2010.
“With losing Kristen [Marris], it was important to add a pitcher with the skill set that Jess has,” commented DiPietro. “She will have every opportunity to step in and take the innings that Kristen got last year.”
Stermel hails from Philadelphia and Nazareth Academy. A first baseman and outfielder, she is a first-team all-academy player and a second-team all-state selection. Stermel helped lead her squad to two AACA and PIAA District 1 Championships in her sophomore and junior seasons. As a junior, she led the team with 13 homeruns.
“Alex can really swing the bat,” said DiPietro. “I'm looking forward to adding her to our lineup. I think she is really going to be a big addition.”
“Adding Jess and Alex to the roster is going to make us a much better team,” added DiPietro. “Both are very good students, as well as softball players, and they will help us achieve our goal of winning the Atlantic 10.”
