Temple Student-Athletes Shatter Academic Records in Spring 2015
5.14.15 | General
PHILADELPHIA - Temple University's student-athletes combined for a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 for the spring 2015 semester, a truly impressive number that shatters the record set the previous semester of 3.09. This marks the third semester in a row in which Temple's student-athletes have raised the bar with their performance in the classroom.
"I am so incredibly proud of our student-athletes," said Temple University Vice President and Director of Athletics Kevin Clark. "They combined to set a new record for academic success, elevating the new mark for cumulative grade point average to such an incredible height of a 3.20. I applaud their hard work, as well as the efforts of our fine academic support staff spearheaded by Justin Miller."Â
Nearly 67 percent of all Temple student-athletes achieved a GPA of 3.0 or greater for the spring, with 11 of 19 sport teams having 70 percent or more of their rosters earning a 3.0 or above.
In all, 16 of 19 teams earned a semester GPA of 3.0 or greater. The field hockey and women's soccer teams led the way with team GPA's of 3.57, followed closely by lacrosse at 3.56 and volleyball at 3.55.
"The past 16 weeks of the spring semester were filled with countless hours of lectures, labs, study hall, tutoring and meetings with faculty, so words cannot express how proud we are of the accomplishments of our student-athletes," said Miller, the Senior Director of the  Nancy & Donald Resnick Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes. "In collaboration with our Athletics administration - led by Kevin Clark - and the Office of Senior Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies, we have implemented a culture where earned excellence is an expectation.  This semester is one for the record books and given the quality of our student-athletes and commitment from our coaches, we look forward to more greatness to come."
Ten of the Owls' teams set new semester GPA records for their program in the spring semester. Of the 19 teams, 17 saw an increase in program cumulative GPA from last spring. Among all student-athletes, 62 percent now have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater, while 90 percent are at 2.5 or above.
The previous semester record from the fall of 3.09 was 0.01 better than the spring semester of 2014. Temple student-athletes have now achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better for seven consecutive semesters.
