4.13.16 | Field Hockey, General, Men's Cross Country, Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For the second-consecutive year, four Temple athletic teams have been publicly recognized for their multi-year academic performance rate (APR), the NCAA announced Wednesday.  Men's tennis is being honored for the third-straight year while women's tennis, men's cross country and field hockey are also receiving recognition.

"To once again have four of our teams recognized for academic performance speaks to the overall success of Temple University student-athletes in the classroom," said Temple's Director of Athletics Dr. Patrick Kraft. "This has been a banner year for Temple, especially in the classroom as our student-athletes continue to set records where it truly matters. I applaud the fine work not only by our young men and women who wear the Cherry and White, but to our exceptional academic support staff led by Justin Miller and our coaches, who have worked hard to instill the true meaning of student-athlete with their teams."

In the American Athletic Conference, Temple is tied for second with UConn with its four recognized teams. Only Tulane, with seven teams, had more teams honored.

The APR announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams who demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APR's within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multi-year APR's in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

Sixty-one percent of Temple student-athletes currently own a cumulative grade-point average above a 3.00.

Women's lacrosse (3.58), women's cross country (3.54), women's soccer (3.49), women's volleyball (3.46), women's fencing (3.43) and women's tennis (3.41) all posted combined fall semester GPAs above a 3.40. In addition 14 (out of 19) programs earned a 3.0+ combined GPA.

Overall, 16 programs have a cumulative GPA of better than 3.0, led by women's lacrosse (3.44) and men's tennis (3.37).

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

The scores required to be in the top ten ranged from 980 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport.

Full APRs for all teams will be released April 20.
