Temple Athletics Continues to Excel in Classroom with 10 Perfect APR Scores
4.20.16 | Football, General
PHILADELPHIA - Temple Athletics and academic success continue to go hand-in-hand as evidenced with the latest release by the NCAA of its Academic Performance Rate (APR) Wednesday.
Ten Temple University athletic programs had perfect 1,000 APR scores for the 2014-15 academic year according to the recent data while the Owls' Football team, coming off a historic year on the gridiron, is one of only two programs (Purdue University) to never show a decline in its APR figure since the metric was formulated in 2004.
Temple also measures up extremely well in terms of its American Athletic Conference peers. Of the 14 teams the University sponsors in The American, Temple combined for a multi-year APR of 988 which ranks second in the league behind Tulane University (989). Temple's 10 perfect teams - Men's Basketball, Men's Cross Country, Men's Golf, Men's Tennis, Women's Basketball, Women's Cross Country, Field Hockey, Women's Soccer, Women's Tennis and Women's Volleyball - are the most by any American Athletic Conference institution.
"There are no finer student-athletes in the nation than our Temple Owls," said Temple University's Director of Athletics Dr. Patrick Kraft. "I am so proud of their accomplishments, especially in the classroom where they continue to set school records. I am equally proud of our hard-working and exceptional academic support staff led by Senior Director of the Nancy and Donald Resnick Academic Support Center for Student-Athlete, Justin Miller."Â
For the first time all of Temple's athletic programs posted multi-year APRs of 970 or greater. In fact, Temple is one of only 11 FBS schools, and the only American Athletic Conference institution, to have all of its teams hit the 970 threshold. The other 10 institutions are Alabama, Duke, Michigan, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Texas, Toledo, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Washington. Â
Also, 12 of Temple's athletic teams improved or maintained their multi-year scores, led by the four teams recognized last week for being in the top 10 percent of their sports: men's tennis, women's tennis, men's cross country and field hockey. All four of those teams scored 1,000 in the multi-year APR to tie for top honors in the NCAA and in the American Athletic Conference.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
